Answers to dad's Questions Feb 2016
I am writing nathan and you and mom and madison and brenna and derek from time to time. I stopped writing girls because i dont have time and i dont care that much.
My typical day is wake up at 6 start study at 630 study till 730 work out till 815 shower and get ready and start companion study at 9 and pray at 950 ( the whole mission does this) take lunch maybe at 10 - 11 and start working at 11. We have dinner at 4 and we get out by 445 so we can knock doors by 5-7. then we see people and then come in at 9- 930. then we plan for the next day and have decompression time and then lights out by 1030. There are 5 things we have to do every day and that is be up on time(630), be out on time( 1015) or with lunch (1115), be on time to 5-7, talk to 20 people on the streets, and update the area book.
my studies are amazing and i love learning deep stuff but also the basics and every thing inbetween. I am re reading the childrens book of mormon and getting down the deep detail of the stories with refrencing to the actual book of mormon. And i have memorized all the 42 teaching points that preach my gospel has with at least a scripture for each one. my ponderizing scripture for the week is mosiah 12:27 "ye have not applied your hearts to understanding; therefore ye have not wisdom; therefore what teach ye this people" sorry if i messed it up, but it is motivating factor that played into my life. For example how can i teach someone about repentence if im not repenting every day. So i have tried to be more diligent in studing with my heart for wisdom so i can teach the people of tacoma.
If you took the misfits of a normal ward and put them all together you would get my ward, but every sngle one is my brother and sister, and i dont hear a slur when they speak, i dont see a gimp when they walk, and i dont feel something missing when i shake their hands. I love this ward. I have been blessed with people that love me uncondishionaly. bishop cornwall is a loveing hard working humble man who has just got a job and befor was fighting to feed his kids but still magnified his calling. Our ward mission leader is the same.
My medication is working ... thats it haha.
so for my investigators
Helen and j: she is an old black lady that we got to come back to church, she has had 4 strokes but is super sweet, he 8 year old grand son is coming to church and he will be baptized. we teach them a few times a week.
Rob osborn: he is a super strong converts husband ( the one who emaild about sunday special) he is content with being cathloich and we have been praying a lot for a change of heart. we teach them when we go over for dinner, which is a lot.
Vonda: she is a black lady that wants to be baptized. We met her when we went to see a less active and got her to come see a baptism. we teach them about 4 times a week.
Jimmy: he has a lot of struggles but wants a change in his life. he has a lot of hold ups so it will take some time.
Tyesha, dayonna, and jouquin: a less active mom (tyesha) and her kids who are super excited to get baptised. they are really fun and we see them a few times it they are home.
kenith and paula: these two are like family, there story is two personal but you will meet them one day, they are getting thre records back.
Nana: has a less active mother that has been coming back to church and we are getting her involved with the young womens
Jacob: we knocked into him and he loves reading so he has been reading the book of mormon and we have meet with him a few times.
The best part of my mission has been that i can look back to who i was and see the huge change i have made. I know with assurity that this gospel is true and every thing that that intailes. I know that i would not have had that converson if i did not come on a mission.
The hardest part is that i love it to much, and i really dont want to come back home. i still have a lot of time but when i think about how fast this is going i get scared and my stomach drops. Remember when we were playing basket ball before i left and you asked me what i was looking forward to the most and wheat i was most nervous about and my responce was the same for both "the people"..... not you ask me this question and my answer is the same but in a differenr light. I love the people, and i dont like to even think about leaving them.
what i want to do better : I would like to lose my life, so i can find it.
i feel happiest each week when i see someone feel the spirit, or when someone who has been learning the gospel bares there testimony.
well that took the whole time so we will do this every so often.
Thanks for your email dad, it gave me an enormous comfort.

A letter from dad to Harrison about career concerns
Harrison, 2-17-2016
Planning for your
future is always good. I have done that all my life and I know what you are
feeling. The best thing you can do now is serve with all your might, mind and
strength. You are developing so many habits that you could not ask for a better
training ground for your future life. We talked about habits a lot during your
youth. You are being forced into some great habits on your mission. Your
morning routine for example is a great way to start each day. When working, you
will do the same. I can't tell you how many times CJ says "this reminds me
of my mission ". There are a lot of similarities to a successful
missionary and a successful young man. You are serving now without any
expectation of compensation from anyone. Once you are in the workforce,
that will change. How well you learn great habits and skills will translate
into school and work life. If you work as hard as I think you are working now,
when you get back, you will be a great success. This time in your life will be
the only time when you have minimal distractions from your work. This is why
the mission has all those rules. It is to keep you focused on the work.
So, in answer to your
questions, you cannot really make money while you are in the field. You cannot
spend money and keep as much of your savings as possible to have when you get
back. The best thing you can do while you are out, it to develop great habits
and great work ethic. This will be a
great asset to you when you come home. Not every missionary will get that from
their mission. Your mission is probably the most like what eternity will be
like. You are serving the lord without much need for monetary needs and do so
selflessly. You may not have another time to do that in your earthly life. Give
it your all, it goes quick.
When you come back
and are attending school. There is a lot you can do while attending school.
Shannon worked for me while she was here and some when she went back to
school. She took some on line classes and finished early. When she took the on
line classes, she lived at home and worked for me. I think she finished in a
little over 3 years. You can do transaction management from school. This is
where you manage the transaction from a web based program. You can write offers
on properties for us to buy. You can do marketing, which CJ is doing a lot
of. There is actually a lot you can do if you want. Your education is most
important. Your college experience is also important. I know you will want to
get going on your career, but like a
mission, you will never have the college experience again and you should
enjoy it. I think we can have a 10-20 hour work type of assignment for you
depending on your school work load.
Remember when I had
you do physical work and you did not really like it. I was trying to give you
the experience at that time in your life so you could draw upon it later.
As a teenage, it was the proper time. While on your mission you can put into
practice some of the habits I have taught you and more that you develop while
you are out. This was also part of my plan. When you come home, I expect you
will have your teenage experience and your mission experience to draw upon, I
will then give you practical training for the job you will be doing as a
career. While you are home between breaks, I will train you on some aspect of
the job. I will do that through out your college career. When you are done with
college, you should be trained. You will have your license and have gone
through the Tom Ferry Training throughout college.
You will be well
prepared for your career.
Keep us the great
work you are doing on your mission. I would like you to write me more. Your
letters are great and I know that your are busy writing many people. It is good to know you are doing great, but I
would like more details.
Tell me who you are
writing. While out on your mission, you
can influence lots of people. I know your have written Brooke. I think that is great and encourage you to
keep doing that. Who else are you writing?
I know some of your friends could use your influence, maybe some current
quorum members preparing to go out. Maybe
some of my relatives that you could develop a more spiritual relationship while
out on your mission.
Tell me how a typical
day is. Tell me how your ward is. I know
a lady emailed mom and asked about the “Sunday special”. Sounds like the ward is good to the
missionaries. Tell me how your ward
mission leader is. I know he emailed
about your recent converts housing situation. I think that is great how you are
trying to help. Tell me how the
medication is working or not working. This was a big concern when you went out
and I have not heard much about it. It must be working well. Tell me about your investigators by name. We can pray for them, when you tell us each week who you are
teaching. If you don't have time, then write us. I like to know the details as
I use those experiences that you have in my life and lessons.
